New in Payload: Performance Improvements, MCP Updates, and Upload Fixes

New in Payload: Release v3.91.0
New in Payload: Release v3.91.0

Payload 3.91.0 reduces MongoDB memory usage, expands MCP find tools, and fixes large Azure uploads, alongside improvements to authentication sessions and the Admin UI.

Highlights

This release focuses on performance and reliability — reducing memory usage for referenced blocks in MongoDB, speeding up rich text field schema processing, and fixing chunked Azure uploads over 256 MiB. It also expands MCP query options and updates Nodemailer to address security advisories.

Also in this release:

  • MCP plugin: adds missing properties to find tools and cleans up object inputs
  • Admin UI: restores image thumbnails in folder lists and renders custom block views on initial load
  • Authentication: brings activity-aware sessions to v3
  • Access control: checks draft read access against the latest version in findByID
  • Rich text: handles pasting unsupported blocks
  • Next.js: fixes development hot reloading when basePath is configured
  • Jobs: saves job logs when runHooks is enabled

Before you upgrade

This release includes compatibility changes:

  • Payload now requires Node.js 20.18.1 or later
  • Azure storage users need Node.js 22.0.0 or later
  • If you supply a custom Nodemailer 9 transport, upgrade nodemailer to ^10 and remove @types/nodemailer
